Melnik, Bulgaria

Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria but it was one of the most important economic cities in the country, with a largest history in its back. The first evidence about the city comes from the Thracian tribe Medi from which the legendary rebel Spartacus belonged.

Centuries later, Romans arrived to this city. In fact, it still preserve a roman bridge in its streets. The name of the town was given by the Slavs because of the sand pyramids surround it, “mel” is a Slave word that means white clay or chalk.

Melnik also belonged to an independent fiefdom and to the Ottoman Empire until 1912.

One of the attractions of Melnik, besides its history, is its architecture: quiet white houses, one above the other, with jambs on the windows in brown-red and quiet courtyards with abundant vegetation.

Luis, a spanish who travel there, speaks about the first impression of the city

“When you arrive there you can’t imagine what are you going to see. It seems that there isn’t anything apart from wine.”

And thats the other amazing attraction of Melnik, the wine. It has original cellars in the sand. It’s a unique form in the world to produce it.

“I can’t say anything worst about the wine, is perfect” Luis said.

But the magic of Melnik is not to talk about it, is visit it and discover the natural charm of this little city.
